Jacques Ganoulis, Special Secretary for Water


J. Ganoulis is Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), Ph.D. (Doctorat d’Etat) in Natural Sciences from the University of Toulouse (France) and visiting scholar at the Universities of Erlangen (Germany), McGill (Canada), Melbourne (Australia), and Paris VI (France). He has more than 35 years experience in integrated water resources management, risk analysis, climate change and transboundary water management, including transboundary aquifer resources and conflict resolution.

He was born in Siatista Kozanis and is married with two children. He is the Director of the UNESCO Chair/International Network of Water-Environment Centres for the Balkans (INWEB-http://www.inweb.gr/) and Senior Consultant and Greece representative in UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP), Paris.

He published more than 200 papers in International Journals and Conferences and is the co-editor/author of 10 books including Transboundary Water Resources Management: a Multidisciplinary Approach (WILEY, 2011) and Risk Analysis of Water Pollution (WILEY, 2009; 2nd edition; translated into Chinese). In July 2013, the French Government, in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the field of water-environmental sciences, has granted to him the title of “Knight of the Academic Order”.

Dimitris Dermatas, Special Secretary of Inspectorate of the Ministry of Environment and Energy
Dimitris Dermatas is currently an Associate Professor of Geoenvironmental Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He obtained his MS (1988) and Ph.D. (1992) from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley, USA. He has 27 years of professional experience in the public and private sector, teaching, conducting research and managing projects and organizations in the fields of environmental management and environmental quality control. His main expertise is in the application of treatment and remediation technologies for contaminated soils, water and wastes, in municipal and industrial waste management applications, and in environmental impact assessment of soils and groundwater.
He was born in Thessaloniki and has three children.
He has social activity, within the framework of the Civil Non-Profit Company «ORGANIZATION EARTH» (www.organizationearth.org), of which he is a founding member (2010) and a member of the Board of Directors and from 2016 until today serves as the General Secretary of Programs.
He has authored or co-authored over 200 articles in professional journals, conference proceedings, handbooks and over 250 research reports, and he has been the editor, guest editor or editorial member of several peer reviewed journals and international conference proceedings. There are more than 3000 citations of his work (h-index = 26 and i10-index = 40, Google Scholar). He has also given more than 70 invited lectures on geoenviromental issues in several international academic institutions as well as both public and private sector professional entities. He has participated as a Scientific Coordinator, Project Coordinator or Principal Investigator in more than 30 research projects, with a total budget exceeding 20 million Euro. He has been elected as a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and has received numerous awards for his teaching and research accomplishments in the field of geoenvironmental engineering.
